In short
- Is Loreto or Cabo San Lucas better for a first trip to Baja?
- It depends on your style. Cabo suits resorts and nightlife; Loreto suits nature and quiet water.
- How far is Loreto from Cabo San Lucas?
- It is about six hours by road, so most people pick one destination per trip.
- Can you see whales in both places?
- Yes, in different seasons. Loreto runs blue whale trips from January to March, while Cabo's humpback season is roughly December to April.
- What does a Loreto tour cost?
- A guided scuba dive is 2,600 MXN and the half-day Speed UTV is 6,000 MXN, with island and whale watching trips sitting between them. All rates are per person.
- Ready to Choose Loreto?
- If quiet water, small groups and a real adventure day top your list of Baja California Sur destinations to visit, Loreto is waiting. Browse Loreto tours and packages to see island days, whale watching, scuba, fishing and UTV trips, then send your dates.
The Vibe: Nightlife vs. Nature
Cabo San Lucas runs on energy. The marina fills with boats, the beach clubs fill with music, and evenings start late and stay loud. Big resorts line the coast, so most days end with a choice of restaurant or bar.
Loreto moves at a slower pace. It was founded in 1697 as a mission town, and the old center still looks the part. Evenings are quiet, dinner is unhurried, and the loudest sound is usually a fishing boat heading out. If you want to dress up and stay out, choose Cabo. If you want to slow down and spend your days outdoors, Loreto fits more easily.
Things to Do: Landmarks vs. Adventures
Loreto trades landmarks for landscapes. Offshore, Loreto Bay National Park protects five islands, so snorkeling, Loreto scuba diving and kayaking begin a short boat ride from the pier. Inland, the road climbs toward the Sierra de la Giganta and the San Javier Mission. For things to do in Loreto, Aventuras tours and packages cover island days, diving, sport fishing, KTM dirt bike tours, e-bike rides and Speed UTV tour Loreto trips, all run in small groups.
Whale Watching: Two Seasons, Two Styles
Loreto works the calmer inner coast. Blue whale watching in Loreto runs January through March, five hours with a guide, lunch and drinks included; the marine park bracelet is not. Whale sightings are never guaranteed, so plan around the months. The two-day UTV and grey whale trip to Magdalena Bay runs mid-January to the end of March, at 38,000 MXN per person. Browse the whale watching tour options in Loreto before you decide.
