Diving in Loreto Bay National Park is generally calm and relaxed, with little or no current at many of our dive sites. Most dives reach approximately 60–70 feet (18–21 metres), where there is plenty of marine life and underwater scenery to explore without needing to go deeper. Conditions vary by location and day, so we always select the most suitable dive sites for the group.

What Can You See While Scuba Diving in Loreto?

Scuba diving in Loreto Bay National Park offers a varied underwater landscape shaped by volcanic rock, steep walls, rocky reefs, large boulders, shallow pinnacles, sandy bottoms and occasional small caverns and overhangs. Most of our recreational dives take place between 40 and 70 feet (12–21 metres), where the marine life is abundant and there is usually no need to dive deeper. Depending on the island and dive site, divers may encounter large schools of snapper, jacks and barracuda, as well as groupers, moray eels, pufferfish, angelfish, parrotfish, triggerfish and many smaller reef species. Look carefully around the rocks for octopus, lobsters, sea stars, sea cucumbers and colourful nudibranchs. Turtles, stingrays, eagle rays, mobula rays and sea lions may also be seen, although wildlife encounters can never be guaranteed. Dive sites around Coronado Island feature dramatic volcanic formations, walls, ledges and rocky reefs. Carmen Island offers shallow pinnacles, steep drop-offs, large boulders and deeper offshore formations that can attract schools of fish and larger pelagic species. Around Danzante Island, divers can explore rocky slopes, walls, sandy areas and pinnacles decorated with sea fans and gorgonians. Winter Diving in Loreto From approximately November through April, water temperatures generally range from 65–72°F (18–22°C). We normally recommend a 7 mm wetsuit, and some divers may prefer a hood or additional thermal layer. Winter brings cooler, nutrient-rich water and excellent opportunities to see large schools of fish, groupers, snappers, yellowtail, barracuda, moray eels, rays and active sea lions. Blue whales, fin whales and dolphins may sometimes be observed from the boat during the journey through the marine park, but these surface encounters are never guaranteed as part of a scuba dive. Underwater visibility during winter commonly ranges from approximately 30–65 feet (10–20 metres), although it can be better on calm days. Seasonal north winds can influence the choice of island and dive site. Summer and Fall Diving in Loreto From approximately May through October, the Sea of Cortez gradually becomes warmer. Early-summer water temperatures are usually around 72–79°F (22–26°C), increasing to approximately 81–86°F (27–30°C) during late summer and early fall. A 3 mm wetsuit is normally suitable during the warmest months, although individual comfort varies. Warm-season dives offer colourful reef fish, moray eels, octopus, turtles, rays, large schools of jacks and barracuda, and occasional encounters with mobula or eagle rays. The warmer water also makes relaxed, longer dives especially comfortable. Visibility generally ranges from 50–80 feet (15–25 metres), with some of the clearest conditions often occurring from September through November, when visibility can reach approximately 80–100 feet (24–30 metres).
